Welcome to WGC MembersThis site will provide the latest news and information for the members of Worfield Golf Club. Latest News.Competitions and HandicapsSome members are unaware that we have been having problems with the computer we use to record our competition scores. This has resulted in the committee having to purchase a new computer. This should be operational within the next two weeks. In the meantime, Tony Preece, Ant Sennett and Jim Edmiston have been manually processing all of the competition scores and handicap adjustments ensuring that the handicap sheets on the noticeboard are up-to-date and correct.
Master ScoreboardUnfortunately, due to a problem with the internet access at the club, we have been unable to update MasterScoreboard with our recent competition results. We will process the updates as soon as the internet becomes available.
Handicap LeagueThe men have lost their first 2 matches in this year's competition, losing away to Shifnal(5.5-0.5)and away to Leominster (3.5-2.5). Two away matches is a tough start but we hope to bounce back with out next 3 matches being at home
Mail on SundayBoth the Ladies and Mens teams were knocked out in the second round of this years competition after both teams suffered a 4-1 defeat to Penn and Wrekin respectively. This leaves just the Foursomes teams left in this years competition, the Men are at home to Shifnal whilst the Ladies have also been drawn at home - to Telford. A Journey in Time (29/02/2012)Our first Captain, John Clarke, has provided the website with a copy of the journal he kept covering the early life of Worfield Golf Club. It is a fascinating read. Go to the Club History page and click on the link. Captains Drive-in (26/02/2012)Well, if this is how our Captains year is going to be then it should be fantastic. On the best day of the year, weatherwise, approx. 150 members turned out to support our Captains. What a fabulous turn-out. Mr. Captain has pointed out that he had to pay quite a bit to arrange for such good weather and he's not suer he can afford it for the rest of the year. congratulations to all of the winners - click on the link for the Mens results. Lady Captain has put their results on her blog. New Captains (22/02/2012)Keith Bowler and Karen Brake have taken office following the AGM's. I'm sure that they will continue the good work of all of the previous Captains. We would all like to thank Past Captains Geoff and Sally for all of their hard work during 2011. Course Update (10/02/2012)Bad news!! David was contacting members with tee times booked for tomorrow that the course would be closed - in fact the everything would be closed - pro-shop, bar etc. No decision made yet regarding Sunday. Mail on Sunday (08/02/2012)The Men have been drawn away to Wrekin in the second round while the Ladies are away to Penn. Good luck to both teams. Mail on Sunday (30/01/2012)Congratulations to both the Mens and Ladies teams for winning their first round matches. The Men defeated Swindon and the Ladies defeated Enville. Website Update (13/01/2012)The Captains Blogs and the committee minutes are only available to members once they have logged in to the website. Please use the feedback link to request details of the userid and password. Masters Day (27/12/2011)This was another event returning this year having been cancelled last year. Over 20 teams took part and were royally entertained by Past Captain Alan Jones with Senior Captain John Greensill doing a "comedy" spot as well. This is very much a fun day with the loudest cheer of the day, as always, going to Carl Bodnieks with the 'Chauvinist of the Year' award (although he is slightly baffled at what he has done to deserve this award) and Geoff Dench being loudly booed for collecting the 'Good Egg' award. Both these trophies (!!!) are selected by the Ladies section. Bring & Win (18/12/2011)This was the first Bring & Win for 3 years - previous cancellations all due to adverse weather. It was good to see so many new members at this event. This is the only event where every entrant is guaranteed a prize. There was some excellent scoring on the day and I'm sure the Handicap Secretary will be scrutinizing the cards. Mr Vice stood in for the Captain whose grand-daughter had double booked him for the panto - Oh yes she had!!! -although there were many comments as to whether he was watching or participating (ugly sisters etc). Winter 4BBB Qualifier (13/11/2011)A total of 54 teams were chasing a top 16 finish to qualify for the knock-out stages of this year's competition. There was obviously some high quality pairings on show given some of the incredibly low scoring. The winners on the day, and top seeds, were S. Snape and D. Garrison with a 62 and runners-up were W. Davies and I. Perry with a 63 (on countback). The draw for the knock-out stages will be on display shortly. UFO spotted at Lilleshall (23/10/2011)Picture the scene, there I was standing on the balcony overlooking Lilleshall golf course, the early October morning mist just starting to lift when, in the distance from the direction of the car park, a vision in blue was coming into view. I turned to my collegue to check that I wasn't dreaming but no, he was just as dumbstruck as I was. The vision came closer and closer, it was quickly apparent that this Lady was very real or was she!!! Her make-up was perfect and her lips full. moist with a bright red hue. As she passed by the balcony, I called over "Morning, Mr Captain" and a wry smile appeared on those lips. Yes, Mr Captain was brave enough to do it and he will probably always have to live this down - it suited him. As you can imagine, it was a difficult job for Keith to pick the team as there was a long list of names wanting to play !!! The team gave the "Lady Captain" for the day a standing ovation as she entered the clubhouse and with modern technology - it didn't take long for the pictures to fly around the world. She was shortly followed by Lilleshall''s "Lady Captain" for the day and she also received a similar welcome. There were definitely some confused golfers wandering around Lilleshall for a while. There was much banter around the tables in the clubhouse - much of which I cannot print but needless to say the two Captains took it all in their stride. Lilleshall's President has provided a couple of official photos.
The most important outcome was a total of £300 raised for charity. .. and the UFO (Unidentified Female Object) Captains
GossipNews has just reached me of one of our Past Captains. Apparently he went for a dip in the lake after attempting to retrieve a ball. Sturdy men are our past captains - after purchasing a change of clothes in the Pro-shop he continued his round on the back 9. Photograghs would be appreciated although I suspect he may pay better to keep them from being posted here. SeniorsOur Seniors, under the admirable captaincy of John Greensill, have now completed their friendly fixtures for the year. Please click on the link for a message from John. Ann Russell (16/10/2011)October is really turning into an Indian summer and the conditions were almost perfect for this years competition. This was reflected in the scores with a huge proportion of the Men's competitors still managing 36 points, even off three-quarters. Top of the pile was one of our Juniors, Stephen North, with a splendid 42 points. Congratulations are in order for our Lady Vice Captain, Karen Brake, who took the Ladies competition with 36 points. I suspect it was a nail-biter as 3 Ladies posted 36 points and they would have had to wait for the countback to be checked before declaring a winner. Perpetual Bowl (02/10/2011)This is a new competition in our calendar, an event sponsored by the PLC. What a turnout - just ask Ben who had to write everyones name up on the noticeboard. We were blessed with glorious weather and some fantastic golf after seeing some of the winning scores. Congratulations to all of the winners - click on the link to see the winners. NOTE: there were a number of members that raised the issue of whether this was a qualifier or not. The Mens handicap secretary has stated that it is not - this is due to there being a singles competition within a team competition. Memorial Trophy (25/09/2011)This trophy is played in memory of those members that are no longer with us. A great turnout saw approx 60 members in a shotgun start. The weather was pleasant and there was some good scoring. The Mens winner of the Warren Holden Trophy was Steve Bagshaw with 39 points and the Ladies winner was Kayleigh Aston. Second trophy in a week for our rising star, Kayleigh. Captain v Seniors (24/09/2011)The annual match between the Captain's team and the Senior Captain's team took place today. The Senior Captain tried to pull a fast one by selecting some of the younger, lower handicapped Seniors to take on the Captain but you have to be quick off the mark to pull the wool over the Captain's eyes and he added some very strong players to a very capable committee team to make up the 16-a-side cpmpetition. The plan did backfire on the Senior Captain as the Seniors lost 7-1 without winning a single match as their point came from two halves. There were some tremendous matches with teams coming from 4 down and our own vice captain hardly dropping a shot. I'm sure that the Captains blog will provide more details but you can click on the link to see the result sheet. Pelloby TrophyThis years winner is one of our new recruits to the Ladies section, Kayleigh Aston, with a couple of excellent scores. See the Ladies page for more details. Stableford Final (18/09/2011)Congratulations to this year's divisional finals winners, Ant Sennett (40 pts) in division 1, Allan Coates (44 pts) in Division 2 and Drew Evans (41 pts) in Division 3. Click here for the full divisional final results. Inaugural Trophy (04/09/2011)The September Medal for the men incorpoates the Medal Final and the Inaugural Trophy. You really had to be on your knock to stand a chance of winning after seeing the winning scores. Congratulations to the Medal Final winners, Richard Burton (68) in Division 1, Neil Holden (62) in Division 2 and Steve Stanier (64) in Division 3. Neil Holden's excellent 62 also saw him take the Mens Inaugural Trophy as well. Also, congratulations to Lady Captain on capturing the Ladies Inaugural Trophy with a 73. Click on the link to see the results of the Medal Finals. 20th Birthday Party (03/09/2100)There were over 130 participants for the golf during the day with some excellent performances. A special mention to Ben Rolls and Matt Dransfield for a remarkable score of 49 pts, that's 13 under!!!, in the Mens 4BBB. It was good to see many of the participants return to the club in the evening for the party. Click on the link for full results from the day. Scratch Semi-final (20/08/2011)Worfield were knocked out after losing 3-1 away to Hawkstone Park. Phil Cates lost 3&2, Ben Rolls and Paul Lewis lost by 1 hole and Simon Lewis grabbed our only win with a 6&4 victory. Team Captain Simon said "A great team effort with the score not reflecting the closeness of the match - at one stage match 2 and match 3 were all square with one hole to play so it could have gone either way - I am looking forward to next year". Wyken Trophy (16/08/2011)This year's competition was amended to a strokeplay event, by the committee, to try and invigourate a competition that has had dwindling numbers over the last few years. A total of 24 5-day members entered the Midweek Medal which doubled up as the Wyken Trophy this year. Congratulations go to Eldon Foster for his 69 which was good enough to take the trophy, as well as being the best score of the day in the Midweek Medal. Ladies Handicap League (16/08/2011)Worfield Ladies continued their excellent performances this year with a magnificent 5-1 win at home to Henlle Park in their second match of their semi-final group. Hopefully, a similar performance against Mile End will see the Ladies through to the final. Lady Captain will be updating her blog with all of the details. Foursomes Championship (14/08/2011)Congratulations to Neil Holden and Steve Bagshaw for their excellent winning score of 66.5 in this years competition. See the Master Scoreboard page for the full results. Scratch Semi-final (12/08/11)Worfield played hosts to Hawkstone Park in the first leg of the County Scratch Semi-final last Friday. Hawkstone came with a very strong team, their highest player was a 2-handicapper. Worfield were unlucky to lose 2.5-1.5 with Daz O'Connor losing on the 18th to the County Champion, Ben Rolls gaining a half, Team Captain Simon Lewis had a 3&2 victory and Matt Dransfield lost 3&2. The second leg is at Hawkstone on Saturday and whilst it will be tough, they have given themselves a chance to progress to the final. P.S. Worfield Ladies have also reached the semi-finals of their County Scratch competition and take on Lilleshall. 20th Birthday PartyAs many of you already know Worfield is celebrating it's 20th birthday this year. The committee have decided to celebrate this landmark with a golf day and a birthday party on Saturday 3rd September. Entry to the golf is open to all members, including 5-day, and all members are encouraged to attend the evening party where there will be a buffet and disco. Please click on the link for an entry form. Ladies Handicap LeagueWorfield Ladies made a good start in their semi-final group with a 3-3 draw away to Henlle Park. See Lady Captains blog for more details. Good luck in the rest of the matches. Sapey win the Sayfield Vase (25/07/2011)Sapey won back the Sayfield Vase in this year's fixture. Yesterday, at Sapey, Worfield attempted to become the first of the two clubs to actually retain the trophy. Alas, it was not to be and Sapey recorded a resounding win. More details on the Captains Blog. Scratch Team march on!!!Congratulations must go to the Scratch Team who, for the first time in the Club's history, have topped their group in Divison 1 of the County Scratch League and progressed through to the semi-finals. Team captain, Simon Lewis, said that it was a fantastic achievement and he praised his team on their efforts. Mens Club ChampionshipsThis year's championships were played in perfect weather conditions. The course was well set up and, with a couple of notable exceptions, scoring was difficult. The climax of the Scratch Trophy was a nail-biting affair and, as always, the leaders from the first day go out together at the end of the field on the second day. This, in itself, brings added pressure. For the first time, in many years, the leaders were involved in a tie after 36 holes. After consulting the Rules, Simon Lewis and Darren O'Connor embarked on a 4-hole play-off (10, 11, 17 & 18). Not sure if the pressure became too much but Darren played a poor first play-off hole and handed the initiative to Simon, who used all of his experience to ensure that he retained the initiative and went on to win his umpteenth Club Championship. Simon was very gracious in his acceptance speech noting that Darren and others had pushed him all the way this year. It is very healthy for Worfield that we had 5 golfers within 2 shots at the top of the leaderboard, especially with Darren and Ben being the young guns and we all know that Phil Cates is capable of winning. They will be challenging each other for many years to come. Congratulations to James Turner for a stunning 61 on the first day and for holding on to his score on the second day to win the Handicap Championship. He made a poor start on Sunday but got it back together to post a 74. Finally, well done to Jamie Lawrence, our Junior Captain, on winning the Junior Championship. JuniorsA new page is available on the website today dedicated to the Junior section. Peter Blaze will be regularly updating it with information about training sessions and friendlies. Captains DayOnce again the Worfield members showed their mettle and turned up in their droves to support Mr. Captain. Without any thought for themselves, they braved some terrible weather conditions as it rained down on Worfield. with only 5 cry-offs in the morning and about the same in the afternoon, there were approx 140 members that braved the weather. It was more a day for hot tea and coffee than alcohol and I think Geoff may have quite a bit of booze left over. Even though many of the greens were heavy with water, there was still some exceptionally good scoring and one or two may be hearing from the handicap secretary. Ladies Handicap LeagueCongratulations to the Ladies on reaching the semi-finals of the Handicap League with a resounding 6-0 victory in their final match. See Lady Captains Blog for more details. Presidents TrophyThis competition is held every two years and celebrates the beginning of the new SHUGC President. this year's event was held at Bridgnorth and congratulations to our Captain and Vice-Captain as they won the trophy. Please click on the link for more information. Club Member and Benefits CardAs many of you know, the EGU recently introduced the CDH (Centralized Database of Handicaps), the purpose of this was to make life easier for clubs and handicap secretaries. Part of this process was to allocate every golf club member a unique 10-digit identifier. This would enable golfers to quote this number when entering competitions and golf clubs would be able to verify their membership and handicap. As you can imagine, it is fairly difficult to remember a 10-digit number, and the logistics of sending this information to every golf club member was also quite daunting. However, it is now possible for each member to register with the EGU and they will send you a card that will have your unique identifier embossed on it. There are a number of other benefits available; discounted prices and services plus free weekly prize draws. For more information or to register and receive your Club Member and Benefits Card, then click on the link below.
